THE MERRICK FAMILY CARRIAGE HOUSE

The historic mansion, The Merrick House, was home to the Reverend Solomon G. Merrick who founded and developed the City of Coral Gables in the 1920’s. The project’s intent was to convey knowledge of vernacular architecture by designing a carriage house that closely follows the architectural composition of historic Coral Gables. The cottage is marked as Spanish Revival with its tastefully placed arched windows, terracotta tile roof, wrought iron balcony, and arched corridor that looks out upon the villa’s garden. With respect to climate and sun, the design works to produce optimal natural ventilation and limit sun exposure, which is vital to south Florida homes.

The design was originally hand drawn my first semester as a freshman (2020) and was later refined (2022) and recreated in Revit to produce more professional drawings and renders. This project demonstrates my ability to design vernacularly as well as displays my progression from a young student to a future architect.
