HERITAGE GARDEN HOUSE

Modern day Coconut Grove is home to Miami’s wealthier community. Affordable housing in this area is sparse and the existing low-cost dwellings lack a sense of community in which Coconut Grove’s historically Haitian culture was built upon. The Heritage Garden House is designed to provide The Grove with low-cost multi-residential apartments which promotes integration between residents.

The lot  measures 50’x100’ and has a total of 12 units ranging from 500-800 sf. Private and common balconies create a space where residents can overlook the garden and commune. The central courtyard is key to the engagement of neighbors as well as providing the building with an efficient means of circulation. The building is designed to use cross ventilation as it's primary means of cooling, which helps bring costs down. The structure is supported by wood as its main building material to also cut costs.
